George Trutina

George Trutina, a testament to the power of hard work and unwavering ethics, stands as one of Calgary’s most triumphant real estate developers. His journey from an immigrant with limited English proficiency and minimal capital to a thriving businessperson exemplifies the spirit of resilience and determination.  Born in Croatia, Trutina embarked on his Canadian adventure in 1972, joining his sister in Toronto. As a tool and die maker, he faced challenges in finding work aligned with his trade. Undeterred, he explored other avenues, including framing and mounting drywall during evenings and weekends.

In 1975, a Stampede promotional film piqued his interest in the west, despite exaggerated tales of Calgary’s frigid winters. In May of that year, Trutina arrived in the city, ready to embrace new opportunities.  His passion for construction led him to secure work as a drywaller. Bolstered by confidence, he took a bold step in 1978 by establishing his own company. With diligent savings, he purchased a modest bungalow on an eight-hectare parcel of land in Chestermere. Although the community lacked paved roads, Trutina envisioned subdividing the land into lots for future houses.

The development industry proved unpredictable, and a mismanaged project by a partner left Trutina nearly destitute. Undaunted, he honored his commitments and independently acquired another piece of land.  Trutina’s unwavering commitment and sterling reputation within the real estate community allowed him to expand his investments. In 1995, he founded Truman, a company that continues to thrive today123.

His remarkable journey serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of hard work, resilience, and vision.
